What is Power-Assisted Liposuction?
Traditional liposuction techniques can end up leaving behind excess fat because of the lack of flexibility of the treatment device. With power-assisted liposuction (PAL), Dr. Leeman can more easily control and manipulate the amount of fat that is removed, allowing for precise and refined treatment results. Power-assisted liposuction treatments can also be completed more quickly and with more damage to the body’s tissues, resulting in a significantly shorter recovery period.
How Does it Work?
Power-assisted liposuction treatments use rapid, small vibrations to break up fat, loosening it and making it easier to remove. An anesthetic liquid is injected into the treatment area, making it easier for the power assisted liposuction device to both break up and remove this excess fat.
What are the Benefits of PAL?
This treatment offers a number of unique benefits when compared to traditional liposuction treatments. Power-assisted liposuction is faster than conventional liposuction and features a significantly shorter recovery time. It also requires a smaller incision than traditional liposuction, further shortening downtime. A study lead by the Department of Dermatology at Tulane University’s Health Sciences Center revealed that power-assisted liposuction can remove up to 30% more fat when compared to traditional methods.
This method is particularly good at treating areas that have been historically difficult to target with traditional liposuction methods, including the belly-button area, inner thighs, and male breasts.
What are the Drawbacks of PAL?
This technique has many of the same downsides of a traditional liposuction treatment. The skin in the treatment area can be left loose and wrinkled after treatment depending on the extent of fat removal there. However, this may correct itself over time, or can usually be eliminated using a variety of skin tightening methods. Some patients also experience changes in the pigmentation of their skin near the treatment area after surgery.
