What is BOTOX and what is Dysport?

BOTOX and Dysport are prescription medicines, called neuromodulators, that are injected into muscles to smooth away lines and wrinkles. BOTOX and Dysport are injected to halt certain muscle motions that create facial lines, creases, and wrinkles, called “dynamic wrinkles.”

What can BOTOX and Dysport injections do for me?

BOTOX and Dysport injections have multiple purposes, most often cosmetic. Injections can be performed to treat any of the following issues:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Forehead lines, lip lines around the mouth
  • “Bunny lines” on the side of the nose
  • Neck bands
  • Tension headaches
  • Hyperhidrosis (sweaty palms and underarms)

BOTOX and Dysport are also used to prevent chronic headaches and migraines in adults. Neuromodulators can also be used to help relieve increased muscle stiffness in the head and neck or muscle spasms in the neck or eyes.

How do BOTOX and Dysport injections work? Dr. Leeman uses BOTOX or Dysport injections to block “nerve impulses.” By injecting BOTOX or Dysport into specifically targeted muscles, the nerve signals causing contraction are halted, which leads to smoothing the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and creases, or muscle pain or spasms in the injected area.

How long do BOTOX and Dysport injections last?

Both BOTOX and Dysport injections last approximately 3 to 6 months, with the peak effect in two weeks from the time of injection. Repeat injections are usually needed 3 to 4 times per year to maintain the smooth, refreshed facial look.

What is the difference between BOTOX and Dysport?

Both BOTOX and Dysport are composed of Botulinum Toxin A, a protein used to relax muscles. Dysport is diluted differently than BOTOX, and has smaller molecules, enabling it to work faster and diffuse more quickly into a broader area, which can be beneficial in treating certain areas, particularly deep forehead creases. Dysport may be a superior choice when faster results are needed, such as an upcoming event.
